Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk
  • Mixing spoon
  • Kneading surface
  • 9x13 inch baking pan
  • Plastic wrap or clean kitchen towel
  • Small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl
  • pastry brush
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 4-6 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¼ cup freshly chopped parsley
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder optional
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Grated Parmesan cheese optional
  • Everything bagel seasoning optional

Instructions

  • Activate the yeast: In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it stand for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy.
  • Combine the ingredients: Add the melted butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir well to combine.
  • Gradually add the flour: Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Knead the dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time.
  • First rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  • Punch down the dough: Gently punch down the dough to release the air.
  • Divide and shape: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball.
  • Second rise: Place the rolls in a greased 9x13 inch baking pan. Cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until puffy.
  • Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Bake: Bake the rolls for 18-22 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Prepare the garlic butter: While the rolls are baking, melt the butter in a small saucepan or microwave. Add the minced garlic, parsley, garlic powder (if using), salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine.
  • Brush and serve: As soon as the rolls come out of the oven, brush them generously with the garlic butter. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese or everything bagel seasoning, if desired. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

Don't overheat the milk; it should be around 110°F (43°C). Kneading is key for a chewy texture. A warm place helps the dough rise properly. Fresh garlic is best for garlic butter. Adjust garlic to taste. Don't overbake the rolls. Brush generously with garlic butter. Reheat leftover rolls in a low oven wrapped in foil. Experiment with different herbs, cheeses, or jalapeños in the garlic butter. Drizzle with honey for a sweet and savory treat. Roll the dough into knots for fun presentation. Store leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
