Equipment

  • Large baking sheet
  • Parchment paper or silicone baking mat
  • Medium saucepan
  • Spatula
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Refrigerator or freezer

Ingredients

  • Approximately 40 saltine crackers one sleeve
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Festive sprinkles

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  • Arrange saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, making sure they are close together but not overlapping.
  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, stir in the brown sugar.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly, and let it boil for 3 minutes. Watch closely to avoid burning.
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and immediately pour the caramel mixture evenly over the saltine crackers. Spread it out with a spatula to ensure all the crackers are coated.
  • Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5-6 minutes, or until the caramel is bubbly and the crackers are golden brown. Keep a close eye on it to prevent burning.
  • Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot caramel layer. Let them sit for 2-3 minutes to soften.
  • Once the chocolate chips are softened, spread them evenly with a spatula to create a smooth chocolate layer.
  • While the chocolate is still melted, sprinkle with your favorite Christmas sprinkles.
  • Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator or freezer for at least 30 minutes, or until the chocolate is completely set.
  • Once the chocolate is set, break the Christmas Crack into pieces and enjoy! Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

Notes

For best results, use fresh saltine crackers. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or in the refrigerator for longer. To avoid burnt caramel, stir constantly while boiling and use medium heat. Variations: Drizzle melted peanut butter over the chocolate, use white chocolate chips, sprinkle with chopped nuts, or add a pinch of sea salt to the caramel.
