Smashed dumpling street tacos are a brilliant weeknight fusion, combining the crispy, lacy edges of a potsticker with the fresh, vibrant soul of a street taco. Using frozen dumplings as a secret weapon, this dish delivers unreal texture and deep umami flavor in under 20 minutes. Topped with a bright slaw and tangy crema, it's a fast, fun, and deeply satisfying meal.

Equipment

  • Large non-stick skillet with lid
  • Spatula
  • Small bowl or flat-bottomed glass (for smashing)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Plate for serving

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons neutral oil avocado or grapeseed
  • ¼ cup water
  • 8-10 small corn or flour tortillas
  • 1 cup shredded green cabbage or coleslaw mix
  • ½ cup Mexican crema or sour cream
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 jalapeño, thinly sliced
  • Lime wedges, for serving

Instructions

  • Heat the neutral oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering.
  • Place the frozen dumplings flat-side down in the pan, ensuring they are not touching. Using a spatula or the bottom of a small bowl, gently press each dumpling into a 1/4-inch thick disc.
  • Cook undisturbed for 2-3 minutes, until the bottoms are deeply golden brown and crisp.
  • Carefully pour the 1/4 cup of water into the hot skillet. It will sizzle violently. Immediately cover with a tight-fitting lid, reduce heat to medium, and steam for 2-3 minutes until the water has evaporated and the wrappers are tender.
  • Remove the lid, increase heat to medium-high, and cook for another 1-2 minutes to re-crisp the bottoms. Transfer the smashed dumplings to a plate.
  • While the dumplings rest, warm the tortillas directly over a gas flame for 30 seconds per side, or in a dry skillet.
  • In a small bowl, mix the crema or sour cream with the juice of half a lime until smooth.
  • To assemble, place 2-3 smashed dumplings on each warm tortilla. Top with shredded cabbage, a drizzle of lime crema, fresh cilantro, and sliced jalapeño. Serve immediately with lime wedges.

Notes

Do not thaw the dumplings; using them frozen is essential for the correct texture. Avoid overcrowding the pan to ensure a crispy crust. For a spicy honey drizzle, mix 2 tablespoons honey with 1 teaspoon sriracha. To make quick-pickled onions, toss thinly sliced red onion with the juice of 1 lime and a pinch of salt. Leftover smashed dumplings can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days; reheat in a dry skillet to restore crispness.
