Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Electric Mixer (stand or hand mixer)
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Parchment paper or silicone mat
  • Cookie sheet
  • Small cookie scoop or melon baller (optional)
  • Fork (optional)
  • Airtight container
  • Clean surface for rolling

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 3 ½ cups powdered sugar adjust to consistency
  • 1 teaspoon orange extract
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest, finely grated
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • Orange gel food coloring optional
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth and creamy.
  • Add the orange extract and orange zest. Mix well to combine.
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed. Be patient and mix well after each addition. The mixture will start to thicken.
  • Continue adding powdered sugar until the dough is firm enough to hold its shape but still pliable. You might not need all 4 cups! Adjust based on your local humidity.
  • If using, add a few drops of orange gel food coloring. Mix until the color is evenly distributed. Remember, a little goes a long way!
  • Lightly dust a clean surface with powdered sugar.
  • Roll the dough into small balls, about ½ inch in diameter. A small cookie scoop or melon baller can help you get consistent sizes.
  • Place the mints on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet.
  • Optional: Use a fork to gently flatten each mint and create a decorative pattern. You can dip the fork in powdered sugar to prevent sticking.
  • Refrigerate the mints for at least 30 minutes to allow them to firm up. This is important for preventing them from spreading.
  • Once chilled, store the mints in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. They can also be frozen for longer storage.

Notes

For best results, ensure your cream cheese and butter are properly softened before mixing. If the dough is too sticky, add more powdered sugar, one tablespoon at a time. If the dough is too dry, add a tiny bit of softened butter or a few drops of milk. Store the mints in the refrigerator to maintain their shape and texture. These mints can be frozen for up to 2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before serving. For flavor variations, try lemon, peppermint, chocolate, or lime extract and zest.
