Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Small saucepan
  • Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Bowls
  • Knife
  • Cutting board

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef 80/20 blend
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 1-2 tablespoons hot sauce sriracha or your favorite brand
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • 2 cups cooked rice white, brown, or quinoa
  • 1 avocado, sliced or diced
  • ½ cup chopped green onions
  • ¼ cup sesame seeds
  • Optional: chopped cilantro
  • Optional: lime juice
  • Optional: sesame oil

Instructions

  • Cook rice according to package directions.
  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add ground beef and break it up with a spatula.
  • Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  • Cook until ground beef is browned and cooked through, about 7-10 minutes. Drain off any excess grease.
  • In a small saucepan, combine honey, hot sauce, apple cider vinegar, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  • Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sauce is smooth and slightly thickened, about 2-3 minutes. Be careful not to burn the honey!
  • Pour the hot honey sauce over the cooked ground beef in the skillet.
  • Stir to coat the beef evenly.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  • Divide the cooked rice among bowls.
  • Top with the hot honey ground beef.
  • Garnish with sliced avocado, chopped green onions, and sesame seeds.
  • Add any optional toppings you like, such as chopped cilantro, a squeeze of lime juice, or a drizzle of sesame oil.

Notes

For a leaner option, use 90/10 ground beef, adding extra olive oil. Adjust hot sauce to your spice preference. Get creative with toppings like pickled onions or crumbled cheese. For a spicy peanut variation, add peanut butter and soy sauce to the sauce. The cooked ground beef and sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
