Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Large skillet
  • Cutting board
  • sharp knife
  • Small bowl
  • pastry brush
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Spatula or wooden spoon

Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef 85/15 recommended
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 ½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup 1 stick
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned and the onion has softened, about 5-7 minutes. Drain off all excess grease.
  • Return the skillet to the heat, add the minced garlic, and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant. Turn off the heat.
  • Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, mustard, salt, and pepper until the beef is evenly coated. Allow the mixture to cool for a few minutes.
  • Unroll the refrigerated dough onto a lightly floured surface, pressing it into a large rectangle. If using crescent dough, pinch the seams together to form a single sheet.
  • Spread the cooled beef mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a half-inch border around the edges. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the beef.
  • Starting from one of the long edges, roll the dough up tightly into a log. Pinch the seam at the end to seal it securely.
  • Using a sharp knife, slice the log into 12 even-sized rolls (about 1 to 1.5 inches thick) and place them cut-side up in the prepared baking dish, nestled together.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, garlic powder, and dried parsley.
  • Generously brush the garlic butter mixture over the tops and sides of all the rolls, ensuring it gets into the crevices.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the dough is golden-brown and the cheese is bubbly and melted.
  • Let the rollups cool in the pan for a few minutes before serving to allow them to set.

Notes

For best results, ensure you drain the grease from the beef thoroughly to avoid a soggy bottom. Roll the dough log tightly and use a sharp knife for clean cuts. For variations, try adding cooked, crumbled bacon or finely diced dill pickles to the filling. You can also substitute the ground beef with ground turkey or use other cheeses like Pepper Jack or Swiss. Serve warm with a side of burger sauce, marinara, or a fresh green salad.
