Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Large pot
  • Baking Sheet
  • Small bowl
  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Oven
  • Wooden spoon or spatula

Ingredients

  • 1 round loaf of bread sourdough or Italian
  • ½ cup butter, melted
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of pepper
  • 1 pound spaghetti
  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage optional
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • Grated Parmesan cheese for serving
  • Olive oil optional, for spaghetti

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Carefully cut a circle out of the top of the bread loaf, leaving about a 1-inch border. Remove the bread from the center, leaving a hollow bowl. Set the removed bread aside for dipping.
  • In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, minced garlic, Parmesan cheese, parsley, salt, and pepper.
  • Brush the inside and outside of the bread bowl with the garlic butter mixture. Be generous!
  • Place the bread bowl on a baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
  • Cook the spaghetti according to package directions. Drain and set aside. Toss lightly with olive oil to prevent sticking.
  • While the pasta is cooking, brown the ground beef or Italian sausage in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess grease. (If skipping meat, proceed to the next step.)
  • Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Pour in the spaghetti sauce and add the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld.
  • Add the cooked spaghetti to the sauce and toss to coat.
  • Carefully fill the baked garlic bread bowl with the spaghetti.
  • Top with grated Parmesan cheese.
  • Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

For a richer flavor, add a tablespoon of tomato paste or a splash of red wine to the spaghetti sauce. To prevent a soggy bread bowl, ensure the inside is thoroughly coated with garlic butter. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days, but the bread may become softer upon reheating. A simple side salad or steamed vegetables complement this dish well. For extra flavor, consider adding a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sauce for a little heat. Experiment with different cheeses in the garlic butter, such as Asiago or Romano, for a unique twist.
