Equipment

  • Slow cooker (6-quart or larger)
  • Whisk
  • Ladle
  • Mugs
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Spoon for stirring

Ingredients

  • 1 gallon whole milk
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Whipped cream optional
  • Chocolate shavings optional
  • Peppermint sticks optional
  • Caramel sauce optional

Instructions

  • Combine Ingredients: In your slow cooker, pour in the heavy cream, whole milk, chocolate chips, cocoa powder, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt.
  • Stir: Give everything a good stir until the chocolate chips are mostly submerged.
  • Slow Cook: Cover and cook on low for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally. Ensure the chocolate chips are completely melted and everything is fully combined.
  • Whisk: Once the chocolate is melted, use a whisk to thoroughly combine all the ingredients until smooth and creamy. If there are any stubborn little chocolate bits, just keep whisking!
  • Keep Warm: Once it's smooth, switch the slow cooker to the "warm" setting to keep the hot chocolate at the perfect temperature for serving.
  • Ladle into Mugs: Carefully ladle the hot chocolate into your favorite mugs.
  • Add Toppings: Top with your favorite toppings, such as marshmallows, whipped cream, chocolate shavings, or a peppermint stick.
  • Enjoy: Snuggle up, sip, and enjoy the warmth and deliciousness of your homemade hot chocolate.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use high-quality chocolate chips. You can adjust the amount of sugar to your taste. Store leftover hot chocolate in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheat gently in the slow cooker or on the stovetop. If your hot chocolate is too thick, add more milk. If it's too thin, add more chocolate chips or cocoa powder. For a peppermint twist, add a few drops of peppermint extract or a crushed candy cane. For a spiced version, add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg.
