Equipment

  • Crockpot (slow cooker)
  • Cooking spray or butter (for greasing)
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Mixing spoon
  • Paper towel (optional)
  • Airtight container (for leftovers)
  • Microwave or oven (for reheating)

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ cup caramel sauce
  • Vanilla ice cream optional, for serving
  • Chopped pecans or walnuts optional, for topping or mixing

Instructions

  • Lightly grease the inside of your crockpot with cooking spray or butter.
  • In the crockpot, evenly spread the apple pie filling.
  • Sprinkle the cinnamon and nutmeg over the apples and gently stir to combine.
  • Evenly sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix over the apple mixture, ensuring it's as uniform as possible.
  • Pour the melted butter evenly over the dry cake mix. Do not stir.
  • Drizzle the caramel sauce evenly over the cake mix and butter.
  • Cover the crockpot and cook on low for 3-4 hours, or until the cake is golden brown and the apples are bubbly. Check periodically as cooking times may vary depending on your crockpot.
  • Once cooked, let the cake cool slightly before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, and sprinkle with chopped pecans or walnuts, if desired.

Notes

Don't skimp on the butter for the best golden-brown crust. If the top is browning too quickly, place a paper towel under the lid to absorb some moisture. Feel free to get creative with spices by adding a pinch of ground cloves or allspice. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave for a minute or two, or warm it up in the oven at a low temperature.
