Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Spoon
  • Large pot or deep skillet
  • Slotted spoon
  • Paper towels
  • Cutting board
  • Knife

Ingredients

  • Wonton wrappers
  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 2 tablespoons taco seasoning
  • ½ medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Shredded lettuce
  • 1 medium tomato, diced
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 avocado, mashed for guacamole
  • ½ cup salsa
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Wate r

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  • Add the ground chicken to the skillet and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
  • Stir in the taco seasoning and a splash of water. Simmer for 5-7 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and the sauce has thickened slightly. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
  • Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet or pot over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully drop in the wonton wrappers, one at a time, and fry for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan.
  • Remove the fried wonton shells with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  • Carefully spoon the chicken filling into the fried wonton shells. Don't overfill them, or they may break.
  • Top with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheese, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, or any other toppings you desire.

Notes

For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce to the chicken filling. You can also use ground turkey or shredded rotisserie chicken instead of ground chicken. For a vegetarian option, substitute the chicken with crumbled tofu or black beans. Store leftover chicken filling separately from the wonton shells to prevent them from getting soggy. To reheat, bake the wonton shells in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for a few minutes until crispy.
