Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Rolling Pin
  • Pizza peel (optional)
  • Pizza stone (optional)
  • Baking Sheet
  • saucepan
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water 105-115°F
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast 1 packet
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for greasing
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon dried basil
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 8 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • Your favorite toppings pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, peppers, olives, etc.
  • Cornmeal for dusting optional

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5-10 minutes, until foamy.
  • Add flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Add more flour if too sticky.
  • Grease a large bowl with olive oil. Place dough in the bowl, turning to coat with oil. Cover with plastic wrap or a towel.
  • Let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  • Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
  • Add minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, until fragrant.
  • Stir in crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  • Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.
  • Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  • Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C). Place pizza stone in the oven while it preheats (if using).
  • Punch down the dough to release the air.
  • Divide the dough in half for two smaller pizzas, or keep it whole for one large pizza.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to your desired thickness and shape.
  • Transfer the dough to a pizza peel dusted with cornmeal (if using a pizza stone) or to a baking sheet.
  • Spread a thin layer of pizza sauce over the dough, leaving a small border for the crust.
  • Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the sauce.
  • Arrange your favorite toppings over the cheese.
  • If using a pizza stone, carefully slide the pizza onto the preheated stone. If using a baking sheet, place the baking sheet in the oven.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Let the pizza cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

If your dough is too sticky, add flour gradually. If it's too dry, add a little water. Don't overload the toppings, as it can make the crust soggy. Experiment with different cheeses like provolone, parmesan, or feta. Brush the crust with garlic butter after baking for an extra layer of flavor. Store leftover pizza in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
