Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef 80/20
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup beef broth

  • Salt for pasta water
  • Fresh parsley, chopped for garnish
  • Extra parmesan cheese for garnish

Instructions

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
  • Add the pasta and cook according to package directions until al dente.
  • Reserve about 1 cup of pasta water before draining.
  • Drain the pasta and set aside.
  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
  • Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned.
  • Drain off any excess grease.
  • Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the minced garlic, 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Cook for another minute, until fragrant.
  • Pour in the marinara sauce and beef broth. Stir to combine.
  • Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for at least 15 minutes, or up to 30 minutes.
  • In a separate small pan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  • Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes. Be careful not to burn the garlic!
  • Stir the garlic butter, heavy cream (if using), and parmesan cheese into the sauce.
  • Add the cooked pasta to the sauce and toss to coat. If the sauce is too thick, add a little of the reserved pasta water until it reaches your desired consistency.
  • Serve immediately, garnished with fresh parsley and extra parmesan cheese.

Notes

Don't overcook the pasta; al dente is best. Use good quality ingredients for the best flavor. Simmer the sauce for a richer taste. Season to taste. Get creative with the cheese by adding mozzarella, provolone, or ricotta. Add vegetables like mushrooms, bell peppers, or zucchini. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or in a skillet with a splash of water or beef broth.
