Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Large skillet
  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Aluminum foil
  • Whisk
  • Spatula or spoon
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • ½ cup bread crumbs
  • ¼ cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley optional

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, onion, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently with your hands until just combined.
  • Shape the mixture into 6-8 oval-shaped patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Carefully place the hamburger steaks in the hot skillet, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. You may need to cook them in batches.
  • Cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until browned. They don't need to be cooked all the way through at this point.
  • Remove the hamburger steaks from the skillet and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
  • Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture is smooth and golden brown.
  • Gradually whisk in the beef broth, making sure to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
  • Bring the gravy to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5-7 minutes, or until thickened, stirring occasionally.
  • Stir in the milk, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Cook for another 2-3 minutes, or until heated through.
  • Stir in the chopped parsley (if using).
  • Pour a thin layer of the gravy into the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Arrange the hamburger steaks in the baking dish, on top of the gravy.
  • Pour the remaining gravy over the hamburger steaks, making sure they are well coated.
  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil.
  • Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the hamburger steaks are cooked through and the gravy is bubbly.
  • Remove the foil during the last 10 minutes of baking to allow the top to brown slightly.
  • Let the bake rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Experiment with seasonings in the hamburger steaks, such as garlic powder, onion powder, or smoked paprika. If the gravy is too thick, add more milk or beef broth. If it's too thin, use a cornstarch slurry. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven. Freezing is not recommended. Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, noodles, or a green salad.
